Aripiprazole, sold under the brand name Abilify, is one of the most commonly prescribed antipsychotics in the country, and SingleCare turned to Dr. Sherma Morton, Eleanor Health’s National Medical Director, to answer a question a lot of patients ask but don’t always get a straight answer to: can you drink on aripiprazole or can you mix aripiprazole? Her answer is a clear no, or at least not safely.

Mixing alcohol with this antipsychotic medication can amplify side effects, since both substances act on the brain and central nervous system in overlapping ways. Combined, they tend to produce more drowsiness, dizziness, and mental fog than either one causes on its own, and that effect isn’t the same for everyone. Morton points out that some people carry a higher risk from the aripiprazole and alcohol combination specifically, depending on dosage, other medications, and individual sensitivity.

“Some people are at higher risk from the combo of aripiprazole and alcohol.”

— Dr. Sherma Morton, National Medical Director, Eleanor Health

The risk compounds further for anyone also taking sleep aids, opioids, or anti-anxiety medications, since all of those slow the nervous system too. Morton’s guidance doesn’t single out aripiprazole as unusually dangerous among antipsychotics, she’s clear that none of them mix safely with alcohol, it’s just common enough that the question comes up constantly.

Her bottom line: skip the drink, and talk to a provider before assuming it’s fine occasionally. Eleanor Health’s clinical team fields exactly these kinds of medication and substance interaction questions every day. [Learn more about Eleanor Health’s approach to medication-assisted treatment →]
