GLP-1 medications built for diabetes and weight loss are opening up a new conversation around GLP-1 alcohol cravings, and Employee Benefit News asked Dr. Nzinga Harrison, Eleanor Health’s Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer, to explain why. Some people taking these medications for metabolic reasons have reported an unexpected side effect: drinking less. Harrison traces the pattern back to the brain’s reward system, the same mechanism already documented for how these drugs quiet food cravings.

“Anecdotally, some Eleanor Health members tell us that GLP-1s quiet the ‘alcohol noise’ in their brains.”

— Dr. Nzinga Harrison, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer, Eleanor Health

Harrison was careful to frame this as an early, anecdotal signal rather than a proven treatment. Some Eleanor Health members have described drinking less in almost exactly those terms, a quieting of cravings rather than a total absence of them, a pattern common enough in conversation to be worth studying even though it isn’t an established clinical effect yet.

“Alcohol use disorder is a complex medical condition shaped by biology, mental health, trauma and environment.”

— Dr. Nzinga Harrison, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer, Eleanor Health

That complexity is exactly why Harrison pushed back on any read of GLP-1s as a standalone fix. A medication that dulls a craving doesn’t address the biology, mental health history, trauma, or environment shaping someone’s relationship with alcohol in the first place. At Eleanor Health, medications, whether GLP-1s prescribed for another condition or medications for addiction treatment prescribed for recovery, are treated as one tool among several, alongside therapy, peer support, and care coordination. As GLP-1 prescriptions climb for metabolic health reasons, more employers and providers are likely to start asking about GLP-1 alcohol cravings directly.
