Chicago, IL – November 25, 2025

Eleanor Health, a leading provider of evidence-based, whole-person care for substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health conditions, announces  the expansion of its virtual outpatient services throughout Illinois. The launch significantly increases access to high-quality addiction and mental health treatment for individuals and families who face longstanding barriers to care.

Eleanor Health’s virtual outpatient program delivers comprehensive, stigma-free support through Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT)—including medications for opioid and alcohol use disorder—alongside therapy, peer recovery services, and mental health care. All services are available remotely and designed to fit into members’ daily lives, eliminating common obstacles such as transportation, childcare, or limited provider availability.

“At Eleanor Health, we believe compassionate, high-quality care should be available to everyone, regardless of where they live,” said William McKinney, CEO of Eleanor Health. “With our expansion into Illinois, we’re increasing access to evidence-based addiction and mental health services while reducing the stigma that keeps so many from reaching out for help. Our virtual model has shown that when people can get care that fits their lives, outcomes improve across the board.”

Growing Need for Accessible Care in Illinois

Illinois faces a significant shortage of behavioral health providers. A recent state analysis identified 9.8 million residents living in designated mental health professional shortage areas, with the existing workforce meeting only 24% of statewide need. Rural counties are disproportionately affected, with some of the lowest psychiatrist-to-population ratios in the country.

At the same time, the prevalence of substance use disorder remains high. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 18% of Illinois residents aged 12 or older meet the criteria for a substance use disorder, yet 84% of those who need treatment do not receive it.

Affordable, In-Network Care

Eleanor Health is now in-network with several major commercial insurers and Medicaid managed care organizations across Illinois, ensuring virtual addiction and mental health services remain affordable, accessible, and coordinated.

Since launching in 2019, Eleanor Health has supported recovery through more than 800,000 therapy sessions, peer counseling visits, and medical appointments in its growing national network. Outcomes from existing markets highlight the effectiveness of its whole-person, trauma-informed model:

  • 96% of members report feeling cared for by their Eleanor Health team
  • Members rate accessibility at 4.7 out of 5, compared to a national average below 2.3
  • 40% of all interactions address social determinants of health such as housing, employment, and relationships
  • Eleanor has served more than 14,000 individuals nationwide

Service availability in Illinois marks a key milestone in Eleanor Health’s broader strategy to bring outcomes-driven, evidence-based addiction and mental health care to communities nationwide.
