Her Campus asked Marisa Savic, Eleanor Health’s National Lead Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, to explain a trend showing up across Gen Z social life: sober curiosity. The term traces back to Ruby Warrington’s book of the same name, and Savic’s framing is less about quitting and more about noticing, paying attention to whether drinking is actually adding something to a night out or just filling a habit.

She also addressed the part of the trend nobody puts on a flyer: the social friction. Choosing not to drink can surface who’s actually a friend versus who’s just a drinking buddy, and Savic sees that as a feature of sober curiosity, not a flaw. The friendships that hold up tend to mean more once alcohol isn’t the thing holding the group together.
