Eleanor Health Launches Free BIPOC and LGBTQI+ Support Groups
June 25, 2020
MOORESVILLE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Eleanor Health, the first addiction and mental health provider delivering convenient and comprehensive care through a value-based payment structure, announced today the launch of its free virtual support groups to prioritize the health and well-being of those who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and members of the LGBTQI+ community.
“Our company’s identity is founded upon advocacy, equity, and justice,” says Eleanor Health Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Corbin Petro. “We continue to seek out ways to apply those core values not only on behalf of our team but also the individuals we serve.”
BIPOC and LGBTQI+ individuals disproportionately experience barriers to treatment and quality care. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, Black adults are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress, but half as likely to receive mental health treatment, support, or medication. Similarly, LGBTQI+ adults are at higher risk for suicidal ideation and attempts, have a greater likelihood of experiencing a substance dependence in their lifetime, and often enter treatment with more severe substance use disorders.
“Research studies have shown that minorities are less likely to self-disclose past experiences in group settings that include individuals of other races, ethnicities and orientations,” said Eleanor Health Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nzinga Harrison. “As a result, current recommendations for culturally sensitive mental health support encourage forming groups of individuals with shared identities and interests to create safe spaces where common experiences can be shared freely and without reservation.”
Eleanor Health’s free virtual support groups empower vulnerable populations to connect with peers, recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions and substance abuse, and provide access to high-quality, affordable treatment options and resources.
BIPOC Support Groups
The US Census Bureau reported anxiety and depression spiking to 41% among Black adults following the death of George Floyd and recent demonstrations over racial injustice and systematic racism. Eleanor Health’s BIPOC support group will create a safe space where this anxiety and pain can be recognized and validated.
“Personalized and inclusive BIPOC care is more important than ever,” continued Harrison. “In our support groups, we hope to reduce community stigma, misinformation, and misdiagnosis through culturally sensitive mental health and addictions care.”
Meeting virtually on Fridays through August 7 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm ET, the BIPOC community can share their experiences, hear from others, and receive peer support. In addition to promoting meaningful dialogue to process racial trauma, Eleanor Health team members will help participants care for their health amid contemporary challenges by sharing resources and skills to develop healthy coping mechanisms.
LGBTQI+ Support Groups
More than 50% of LGBTQI+ Americans say they have experienced violence, threats, or harassment because of their sexuality or gender identity. Continuing the momentum of Pride Month and the Supreme Court’s ruling to extend protections for LGBTQ workers, Eleanor Health’s LGBTQI+ support group is an extension of the company’s dedication to serve individuals who haven’t been honored because of their identity and supporting the unique needs of the LGBTQI+ community.
The newly launched LGBTQI+ support group is led by LGBTQI+ individuals in an effort to share strategies, successes and struggles with participating members.
“As a member of the LGBTQI+ community, our commitment goes beyond just LGBTQI+-friendly,” continued Petro. “Our team has the ability to be fully transparent in who they are while working through recovery in a setting that feels safer and more affirming with others who have shared experiences.”
Adults in recovery can join the virtual support group every Thursday from 2:00 – 3:00 pm ET. A separate group reserved for those in the LGBTQI+ community actively using alcohol, cigarettes, opioids, or other drugs will meet each Friday from 3:00 – 4:00 pm ET.
